Wellness care for pets and disease prevention is at the core of what we do at our Upper East Side veterinary hospital. From the moment your pet enters, we work with you to help them live a long and healthy life by offering medical dental care, diagnostic testing services, and other essential services for an extended lifespan.
At our core is a no-kill mission: through adoption, rescue, and spay/neuter programs for dogs and cats, supporting shelters and rescue groups across the country, and mobilizing communities for homeless pets. To achieve this mission, we rely on caring people like you who will adopt, foster, donate, or volunteer their time – so give animals another chance!
As a leader of the humane movement, you will build relationships with local and state organizations, policymakers, and community leaders to expand the impact of Best Friend’s efforts. In addition, you will help shape its direction forward while driving culture shifts for animal welfare through coalition-building influence/advocacy work.
The Sanctuary is at the core of our organization, set amongst Utah’s beautiful red rocks. Here, you will meet animals that inspire our mission of saving more lives and our welcome center, where tours, membership applications, city and hiking trail maps, and shopping can occur.
Surgical Medicine
Surgical care is an integral component of our lifesaving mission. Surgical care provides invaluable lifesaving opportunities by offering this form of medical treatment for pets that affect the quality of their lives and can even prevent death, such as severe infections and injuries that cannot be effectively addressed with medication alone. Best Friends provides training, support, and assistance to animal shelters, rescue groups, and spay/neuter programs across America. Nursing student David Sprague fosters dogs at Best Friends Sanctuary as he volunteers, which has become his happy place. Savannah used to be shy and suffer from skin conditions but is now learning to navigate life with her new family. We also provide disaster response teams for animals affected by hurricanes and wildfires in Maui, Hawaii – we need people like you who will adopt, volunteer, or advocate for needy pets!
Emergency Care
Best Friends is leading the no-kill movement across America by providing lifesaving adoption, spay/neuter, and support programs for dogs and cats and supporting shelters and rescue groups nationwide. Additionally, we help save animals affected by natural disasters through disaster response efforts. Volunteers at our Lifesaving Center in New York City help foster shy cats such as Savannah with health issues matching adopters with their ideal pet; nursing student David Sprague fosters dogs at our Lifesaving Center while driving for our organization; nursing student Vicki Williams mentors new volunteers while being Elton’s matchmaker!

Sara Virgil was browsing online when she came across an image of Fluff Fluff, an adorable white and black cat that recently returned to Best Friends after its adopters noticed she was struggling to breathe. Best Friends staff immediately referred Sara to a cardiologist, where it was confirmed that Fluff Fluff suffered from heart failure.
Sara knew she could help the sick kitty by adopting her, and now Fluff Fluff has a new name and is living a happy and contented life with Sara as her pet parent. Fluff takes all her medications regularly without complaint; she has even gone on a diet to reduce weight. Sara considers her the “best medicine.” She’s doing very well now, with Sara lovingly considering her “the best medicine.”
