How to get your Dream Job
You are stuck in a dead-end job and not enjoying it, but the prospect of going out and looking for your dream job is daunting. There is a lot of competition and the odds of landing an interview and getting your dream job feels impossible. It’s not impossible,
Here are a few tips to help you reach your goal:
1 . Think out of the Box
There are many opportunities you may not even have thought of; for example, you may be in the automotive sales industry, thinking you need to stick to vehicles, but your skills may be in sales or dealing with people. This can lead to so many different industries; pharmaceutical sales, IT, events, tourism, advertising, and public relations, to name a few. With your personality and experience, organizations will need your skill set.
2 . Utilize Social Media
Now is the time to start if you aren’t using social media. Even before a job search, start creating your brand. As The New York Times states, social media is viewed as a “career management tool and not just for job hunting.” Gone are the days when your typing skills were of foremost importance; employers now want to know if your personality and interests will fit their company’s culture. They can also be a great way to connect with industry leaders, recruiters, like-minded people, and even employees at your target company. Just remember to keep your profile clean and remove anything that may hinder your brand.
3 . Apply to Job Boards and Recruitment Agencies
Job boards or portals are effective and free job search tools. Once you have uploaded your resume and job search criteria, you will have thousands of jobs to apply for with just a few clicks of the mouse; no more printing resumes and posting them off to companies, where they would likely end up in the bin. With their ‘job alerts’ that fit your criteria, job listings are sent directly to your email or mobile, so you can search for jobs anywhere and at any time that suits you.
Recruitment agencies can give you the choice of job openings based on their knowledge of your skills, and with their in-depth knowledge of the industry you are in, they may even know of jobs that are not being advertised.
4 . Keep Learning
Stay at the top of your game. There is always something new to learn. Pursue online courses, volunteer work, join industry groups, or find a mentor. All of this will also add positively to your social media brand.
5 . Do your Research
Learning about the company’s products and services will help you during the interview process. Apart from giving you confidence, it will show the interviewer your understanding, proactivity, and dedication to your career.
6 . Be Positive
You may have had a few failed interviews already, and the prospects are not looking great. Remember to stay positive, as a negative attitude will show, and stay upbeat and enthusiastic. Learn from previous interviews and understand that your previous interviews may just have been a good stepping stone to your dream job.
