How to Service Your Air Conditioner at Home

Maintaining an air conditioner properly is vital to the well-being and comfort of you and your family. Find the best Aircon servicing Singapore.

Improved maintenance practices will extend the lifespan of any unit.

To avoid costly repairs, conducting regular maintenance checks on your own at home is crucial. Start by switching off the power and unplugging your unit before performing this procedure.

Check the Condenser

Your air conditioner’s condenser unit is an intricate network of electric wires and motors. Any dirt or debris build-up must be reduced immediately to maintain maximum efficiency and prevent potential clogging issues. When working on your AC, ensure its power has been shut off using either a breaker switch or a non-contact voltage tester; this will protect against electric shock while working on it.

Start capacitors are cylindrical components that supply extra charge to start up fan motors and are essential in the operation of air conditioners. A poor capacitor may result in your air conditioner not turning on, having weak airflow through vents, or making an annoying humming sound when starting up its fan motors. Reducing dirt and debris around your AC by cleaning its coil, trimming vegetation around its perimeter, and regularly flushing its condenser with a garden hose can extend its lifespan significantly.

Check the Electrical Connections

Electrical wiring is at the core of everything, keeping your appliances, gadgets, and HVAC equipment operating correctly. Damaged wires, incorrect voltage settings, and other electrical issues are often responsible for AC units not working as intended.

First and foremost, turn off the power to your air conditioner at its breaker box to ensure maximum safety – working with electricity can pose risks of electric shock or fire!

You will require a multimeter to test the electrical connections to a compressor with two wires. Use an uncontaminated section of copper line set tube as a ground and measure resistance between it and one of the wires.

Suppose your pressure switch’s reading is infinite (open circuit) or zero (thermostat replacement is likely), or there has been a power trip to an electric switch or fuse. In that case, professional help should be sought to address this.

Check the Condensate Drain

Air conditioner drain lines carry condensation from evaporator coils to a pan or floor drain for collection, providing water-based cooling to your home. If this line becomes blocked, it could lead to mildew, mold growth, and other undesirable side effects in your home environment.

Unclogging drain lines is difficult, but there are specific indicators you should keep an eye out for that can signal potential trouble. Water pools around the drain, suggesting your pan is full. When this occurs, it’s time to clear out the line.

You may be able to handle some of the work yourself if you know where your drain line is located and how to access it, though first, be sure to turn off power to the unit at your breaker box before beginning. Once off the power, remove the cap from the line, and flush with vinegar/bleach/hot soapy water mix (to help prevent future clogging). Finally, put the lid back online before replacing the cap to seal it. This should help avoid future blockages in future.

Check the Filters

The filters must be regularly checked whether you own window air conditioners or central AC units. Dirty filters decrease unit efficiency, increase energy costs, and lead to moisture build-up inside your unit, potentially leading to mold and mildew issues.

Before performing any filter checks, always turn off the power to your unit. This is particularly important when dealing with window units that contain electric wiring that could become damaged from movement caused by opening and closing it with your hands. If applicable, switch off the power at both the breaker box and any exterior shut-off boxes near your unit,

Removing the filter and inspecting for signs of moisture or tears that could let water in can save money over time; cleaning reusable filters can extend their lifetime, but replacing them with disposable ones might be more economical, and airflow is still uninterrupted. When reinserting it back in place.
